I've just checked it out on Gamefaqs.com and I've found this:

Level and Lives Select:
Go to the main menu. Hold down (A) + (B) on controller 2 while selecting Options. You can now select how many lives you start with (up to 9), choose your starting stage, and play at the Very Easy and Mania difficulty levels.

As you can see you were right about the Very Hard Mode, but also you can select another features.

Thanks for the research, I remember now that it unlocks mania. This has now made me remember I used to do this cheat as a kid because I found SOR difficult. I used to also join the game as player two when I ran out of continues Razz

I remember there was a year I went to my friend's house, we play Streets of Rage 2 with Only HARD LEVEL and we almost die in front of Mr.X. Because both of us have hard time with Shiva.

Shiva is very strong, you have to sacrifice a special move just to stop him from grabbing you

Yeah this should be the best solution, when he catch the front we still have chance to brake him with specials, but once he comes from your back that's it. This boss is very challenging than Mr.X.

Totally agree however MR.X on Streets of Rage remake V5 is more challenging. I found SOR3 Robot at the end very challenging aswel.

I can tell you the worst one was Robot Y/NEO X, because he keep flying around also he can slide in front of you sometimes. The most horrible thing is you only have 3 mins to kill him or the factory will blow off. Other bosses are just OK to me.

It is true the Mr X from V5 is better than SOR3 Mr X, at least he fights better not just using guns.

Agreed on Neo X & the time limit. Very tuff level. However the story was disappointing.

If there is no time limit, whether is Robot Y or NEO X, he's not even my match at all, haha.

Killing the robot Y is far being as hard with my method and Blaze. Just get him out of the screen, position yourself on the second closest line of the edge of the screen (or a bit closer to the end of the screen) and just make a defensive jump with a regular lap of time between them.

This enables Mania Difficulty and Switches the player's lives upto 9.

I'll do the same thing with all the characters (Except Zan who has a horrible jump ) to defeat Neo X / Robot Y and works with Shiva sometimes. Here you can take a look. The fight with Neo X starts at 3:40

It takes much more time with an offensive jump, I prefer staying in a certain place and using defensive ones.

Just to inform everyone, among all the Bosses this hell Robot Y was the most hardest Boss to defeat with style. Sometimes i perform combos halfway it just breaks off from him, only short combo or direct hits can work effectively on him. This is why i learn a lesson best not to perform COMBOS at Robot Y because he will mostly break off your combos.

I even started a thread for Robot Y (Better ways to beat Robot Y/NEO X)

The mania mode wears its name very well. The only times I play it it's with Game Genie codes.
